So this is held in RAM as its loaded at boot up.

Not sure what you mean. The OS (Windows or whatever) is installed in the hard drive. Do you mean the BIOS? The stuff that comes up when you boot up the computer? Thats held on a ROM chip on the motherboard (Read only memory).
