I also only have free security programs on my computer and haven't had any infections since early this year. I tried a lot of different ones and settled on these, what worked best and didn't slow my computer resources down...

Comodo Firewall

AVAST 4 Home Edition Antivirus

SuperAntiSpyware (free)

This program includes 'homepage hijack protection' that stops your homepage being changed without your permission.

Spybot S%26amp;D (free)

Ad-aware SE Personal (free)

Security Question???ms stress opera theater

NO!You canT protect your PC only with free programs for 2 reasons:

1)To many programs=)will slow down your PC

2)If the security companies would know if that you combine some products to give you full security, than the free security products wouldn't exist.

You should buy a security software:

1) For low-resources PC's : Nod32 or Avast

2) For PC's with resources: Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 7 or Norton Internet Security 2008(both very very GOOD)

AND TRUST ME THAT ALL I SAID IS FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE;););)
I learned this one the hard way

switch to linux its the only solution
Yes. I only use freeware and I have not had an infection on my computer since I used MacAfee, back in 2003. I would recommend..

AVG 7.5 Free

Spybot S%26amp;D

SpywareBlaster

SpywareGuard

and cClean version 118 to clear my cookies and temp files at boot.

You can find them all in the following link.

its like taking all the medicines in the world to protect yourself from cancer.

you won't be full protected but its a good precaution.
No, You can never FULLY protect your PC even with paid software.Anti virus software is only as good as the definition files on your system. If definiton files are few days old, then your anti virus software may not catch virus. Even if your have latest update of definition files still you are not fully protected as there is some lag when a virus is launched and anti virus software is updated for that. If you get virus during that lag time than you are out of luck.
