you tried 2 good working monitors for your old e machines, maybe the monitors are working and your cpu is not working, i beleive most of e machines model are built in video, it is better for you to buy new one for your son , so that he can enjoy using it.

Go to Control Panel--%26gt; System--%26gt; Device Manager--%26gt; Hardware--%26gt; Display Adapters. Click on your Adapter. It SHould say Device is working properly.

If Not try a new card.
try a new moniter, that happened with a couple of my old moniters, they are plugged in and even occasionally flash the screen, but it stayed amber, also i assume youve tried wiggling the mouse/pushing the space bar on the key board?
bad video card on computer?
try to remove what have you added on the mother board..

and re install it again... your motherboard sims to reject the hard drive you added... maybe they are not compatible to each other..

if you have to hard drives... hmm....

check the jumper setting on your hard drive, you might have set your hard drive in to master drive similar to the other one,..
a bad video card and if its on board ie: built into the mother board you have serious problems
Try reseating the video card (assuming it's not integrated into the motherboard)

1. Unplug all cables and power lines. Open the case. Ground yourself (discharge static electricity) by touching a the metal framework.

2. Locate the square card that is perpendicular to the motherboard and corresponds to where you would plug the monitor into (that is the card that the monitor cable attaches to from the outside).

3. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw holding the card to the metal frame.

4. Lift the card evenly up (it may stick, but be gentle) until it is clear of the slot.

5. Ensure that the slot and the card are free of dust (use canned air to dust NO LIQUIDS)

6. Reinsert the card into the slot be careful not to put it in at an angle.

7. Press evenly yet firmly on the top of the card until it is fully inserted into the slot (you shouldn't be able to see the metal connectors)

8. Rescrew to card to the frame. Close the case and test.
The orange light means you have power on but no signal, so you either have the monitor plugged into the wrong port (com1 and VGA ports look strikingly similar) or your VGA part of your motherboard is dead. Then you will need professional help
Check for more than 1 video output on your computer. It may have video built in to the motherboard and a separate video card. If there is more than one try the other.

How old is the monitor you tried to connect - I have seen some older 14" monitors have ruined newer video cards.

You can try adding a video card in a pci slot to see if this works - used ones can be picked up cheap.

As for the drive a not starting this may be in the settings for the motherboard. If it runs the cd you can boot from a cd or you can go into set up from the initial screen and change the boot settings.
video card might be bad
