I was in the SPP chat room and Wifi Chat last Friday and I got kicked and banned from Erik_Destler. All I was doing was asking a question. Why do I get banned like that? And what's wrong with impersonating members? Why does oper impersonation get you banned from IRC or to leave you banned from a forum for a long time after trolling and spamming? What would happen if they didn't ban that person for impersonating ops? Would it still continue then or would he have learned his lesson by then after the enough warnings they gave him about it?

A: I can only say "probably", as it will vary depending on the IRC network's policies and the staff member responsible. Usually the IRCop that sets a ban will be the one to lift it, so it may just depend on how they feel about the situation.

The time you are banned for should be used to think about what you've done and commit to improving your act before you are allowed back on. Trying to get around the ban is undermining the person who set it. Trolling is just a bad idea generally, although I admit it can be hilarious...

A: Are you sure there wasn't more to it? Your next few questions suggest that there was.

Think about this: I am sure that you have friends who you tell almost anything, and other people that you don't know who you tell very little. If someone in the latter group pretended to be someone in the former group and you didn't realise, you could tell them things that you wouldn't normally. Basically you'd behave differently. Think about how you'd feel when it turned out that you told your secrets to someone you don't like.

A: Impersonating an IRCop is the easiest and quickest way to get yourself banned. IRCops have a lot of power and even when they aren't O:lined they still get a lot of respect that they have had to earn, and are called to deal with many difficult situations. You haven't earned the right to that respect or responsibility.

To conclude, you, or he, should just try and think things through a little bit and have more respect for others, particularly those with some sort of authority over you. However, you should also remember as well that there are thousands of IRC networks and forums that you could be a part of it you don't like the ones you were banned from. Be aware that they could ban you if you do the same things that got you banned on the others, though...
